This unit's Summative Assessment will be an IN-CLASS exercise. You will craft a 1-Page written piece (and related visuals) that applies what you have learned about neuronal communication and the NMJ. Details are below. |
And THIS is the Rest of the Story ….
A Series by Scientific St. Mark’s
Scientific St. Mark’s is exploring the the impressive and unexpected role Molecular Movement Across the Membrane plays in our lives in the series - And This is the Rest of the Story. This specific edition will focus on the action of neurotoxins. Given your expertise in the neuronal communication involved at the NMJ, you have been hired to explain the biology behind one specific neurotoxin and its observed effects.
The Task
Each student will be given a neurotoxin, a brief description of how the neurotoxin interacts within a motor neuron and/or skeletal muscle cell of a neuromuscular junction, and a brief description of what happens to an individual who has been exposed to this toxin.
Your task will be to:
- Describe the normal structure and function of neuronal communication as is relevant to the given scenario,
- Describe how neuronal communication is affected by the given toxin, and
- Explain the physiological effects that occur based upon your understanding of neuronal communication at the NMJ.
Requirements:
- Your written explanation can be no longer than 1 page (size 10 font minimum)
- You must provide relevant visuals that you create IN CLASS during the assessment.
Evaluation:
Resources: What can I bring and use?
- You are allowed to use all content that you created in the unit. This means any notes, diagrams, etc that you constructed can be brought to the assessment and used. If you have information stored digitally, e.g. a google doc, you can access that doc via your computer.
- You WILL NOT BE ALLOWED to conduct any additional research during the assessment block. In other words, no other sites should be open and no communication between other individuals should occur during the Assessment Block.
- The HONOR CODE will be in effect for this assessment; and we take this Honor Code very seriously.
- Any visuals included must be constructed by you during the Assessment Block. As this is the first draft of your submission, visuals do not need to be of publication quality but should be clear, purposeful, and referenced within the written component. Note: Diagrams do not count as part of the 1-page limit.
